AURORA | A look at some of the top games, tournaments and happenings in Aurora prep sports schedule between Dec. 17-Dec. 22, 2014:

The Eaglecrest and Overland boys basketball teams play in Las Vegas Dec. 17-20 at the Tarkanian Classic hosted by Bishop Gorman High School. The Trailblazers are among 16 teams in the top bracket of the tournament — the Platinum Division — while the Raptors play in the Premier Division. Both divisions include talented teams from across the country. Brackets and results for the Platinum Division, here, and for the Premier Division, here.

The Grandview Invitational girls basketball tournament runs Dec. 17-20 as the host Wolves attempt to win their second tournament title of the season against a strong field (bracket/schedule, here). In other tournament action, Eaglecrest wraps up the ThunderHawks Hoops Fest at Prairie View on Dec. 19 in the fifth-place game (bracket/schedule, here), while Gateway and Rangeview each compete in the Heritage Memorial Hoopla tournament Dec. 18-20 (bracket/schedule, here).

Several of Aurora best wrestlers head to the UNC Christmas Classic Dec. 19-20 at Budweiser Events Center for a tough multiple-classification event featuring more than 60 teams from across the state plus some from Wyoming. Eaglecrest, Hinkley and Regis Jesuit represent Aurora in the mix. Meanwhile, Cherokee Trail plays host to its annual Holiday Duals tournament, which includes Rangeview, on Dec. 20. Grandview wraps up the Reno (Nevada) Tournamet of Champions over the weekend as well.

The annual Coaches Invitational girls swim meet is set for Dec. 20 at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton as swimmers and teams in multiple classifications get the chance to race each other to close out the first portion of season prior to winter break. The meet is often a rough preview of how the state meet at the end of the season might unfold, though not always, as Regis Jesuit finished third at last season’s Coaches Invite and went on to win the Class 5A state championship. Grandview and Smoky Hill also scored as a team at last season’s meet and will return, while Cherokee Trail, Eaglecrest and Hinkley have at least one swimmer or diver set to compete. Prelims begin at 8:30 a.m. with finals at 4 p.m.

Both the Cherry Creek and Regis Jesuit ice hockey teams play on the road Dec. 20 as they close out the first portion of the season before winter break. The Bruins’ co-op squad faces Battle Mountain at Eagle Ice Rink at 2 p.m., while Regis Jesuit skates at Aspen at 4 p.m.

The Regis Jesuit boys basketball team plays at Doherty at 6 p.m. Dec. 22 looking to finish unbeaten going into winter break.
