AURORA | A look at the games, tournaments, meets and happenings in Aurora prep sports between Jan. 22-Jan. 28, 2015:
• The Grandview wrestling team plays host to Eaglecrest at 7 p.m. Jan. 22 with a dual meet victory all but sealing the Centennial League championship for the Wolves, who begin the rugged Top of the Rockies tournament — which features 33 teams from Colorado, Nebraska, Nevada and Wyoming — the next day. Overland pays a 7 p.m. visit to Cherry Creek on Jan. 22 — with a potential 106-pound match between ‘Blazers standout Daniel Cuc-Capota and the Bruins’ Josh Finesilver as a highlight — and Smoky Hill is at Arapahoe at the same time.
• All 10 Aurora girls swim teams compete in dual meets on Jan. 22, with action spanning the Centennial, Continental and EMAC conferences. Most of the competition takes place in the city, with Regis Jesuit (ThunderRidge) and Overland (Smoky Hill) home for 4 p.m. meets and Hinkley (Brighton), Cherokee Trail (Eaglecrest), Grandview (Mullen) and Aurora Central (Northglenn) home at 4:30 p.m.
• The Smoky Hill boys basketball team meets Mullen at 3 p.m. Jan. 23 at Pepsi Center in the latest matchup featuring an Aurora team on the home floor of the Denver Nuggets. Later in the evening on Jan. 23, top-ranked and undefeated Regis Jesuit pays a 7 p.m. visit to Legend in Continental League action and the Centennial League, Rangeview playing host to Northglenn in a vital early EMAC contest and the Centennial League slate includes Cherokee Trail traveling to Overland for a 7 p.m. tip.
• The Smoky Hill Classic wrestling tournament opens at 8 a.m. Jan. 24 with an 18-team field that also includes Eaglecrest and Rangeview. Aurora Central is at Kennedy and Regis Jesuit travels to Northglenn for competition tournaments.
• The Cherry Creek co-op ice hockey team takes on Ralston Valley at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 27 at APEX in a battle of teams that were unbeaten as of Jan. 21. The Mustangs — winners of the last two state championships and owners of a win streak bordering on 40 games — beat the Bruins in last season’s state semifinals.
• The Aurora Public Schools Championship Dual Meet is set for 4 p.m. Jan. 28 at Gateway as the host Olys, Aurora Central, Hinkley and Rangeview battle it out in a round robin dual tournament for district bragging rights.
