AURORA | The week’s rainy weather continues to force postponements and reshuffling of one of the busiest periods at the end of the spring prep sports season.
Due to some shuffling, a playoff tripleheader is scheduled for Friday at Legacy Stadium, which will feature back-to-back Class 5A girls state playoff games featuring Aurora teams, followed by the Regis Jesuit girls lacrosse team taking on Cherry Creek in a second round postseason contest.
Originally scheduled to be played at Stutler Bowl, the Regis Jesuit-Cherry Creek lacrosse game had to be moved to Legacy Stadium because of the decision to move up the finals of the Centennial League Championship track meet. The league meet got in prelims and a handful of finals during a break in the weather Thursday, but with the forecast not looking good for Saturday’s second session, the finals were moved up to 4 p.m. Friday at Stutler Bowl.
The girls soccer postseason got started in the rain on Tuesday and will continue to be played on the turf in the rain, with sixth-seeded Cherokee Trail set to play host to No. 11 Cherry Creek at 4 p.m., followed by another Centennial League showdown between No. 2 Grandview and No. 15 Smoky Hill at 6 p.m. Both game times were shifted forward an hour from their original time to make it possible for the third game on the back end.
Thirteenth-seeded Regis Jesuit, the other remaining Aurora team in the 5A postseason, plays at No. 4 Broomfield at 6 p.m.
A slew of baseball district tournaments were postponed from Saturday to Monday or Tuesday.
District 2 with Grandview, with Legend as the host, is now slated for Monday, while the District 7 tournament Regis Jesuit is in will be played Monday or Tuesday as well, either at the original site, Denver East, or All-City Field.
Earlier in the week, the Class 5A girls state tennis tournament was postponed from May 7-9 to Monday through Wednesday at the Gates Tennis Center in Denver.
Unaffected by the weather is league championship swimming, as Hinkley hosts the EMAC Championships Friday and Saturday, while Cherokee Trail, Grandview, Overland and Smoky Hill compete in the Centennial “A” League Championships both days at Cherry Creek and Regis Jesuit taking part in the Continental “A” League Championships at Heritage.
