DENVER | The Cherokee Trail volleyball team won its first match at the Class 5A state volleyball tournament, but the Cougars didn’t stop there.

Coach Terry Miller’s second-seeded team, which had dropped all six of its matches over the past three seasons at the state tournament, got the monkey off their back with a hard-fought four-set victory over Regis Jesuit Friday afternoon at the Denver Coliseum.

The Cougars (23-4) followed that up with a four-set victory over Centennial League rival Cherry Creek to wrap up the top spot in Pool II and a spot in Saturday’s semifinals against an opponent to be determined.

Four more pool play matches remain beginning at 8 a.m., where the semifinal matchups will be finalized.

Fourth-seeded Rock Canyon went to 2-0 to win Pool IV and awaits the winner of Pool I, while Cherokee Trail will face the winner of Pool III, which quite possibly could be Aurora and Centennial League rival Grandview.

Coach Patty Childress’ sixth-seeded Wolves — the two-time defending 5A state champions — waited around to play the final match of the day on Friday and surged to a 16-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-19 win over No. 3 Chaparral.

Eleventh-seeded Regis Jesuit (14-12) put up quite a fight against Cherokee Trail in their pool play opener, even taking a late lead in the fourth set before the Raiders couldn’t close it out and force a deciding fifth set.

Coach Laura Dunston’s Regis Jesuit team has a pool play match remaining against Cherry Creek on Saturday to conclude its season.
