Eaglecrest High School graduate Danielle Williams placed fifth in the women’s triple jump at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships Sunday.
Williams, who won the Class 5A state championship in the triple jump on May 19 at Jefferson County Stadium, fouled on three of her six attempts in the finals at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., but her top effort of 41 feet, 1 1/2 inches was a season best and put her right in the middle of the field that included athletes from California, Florida, Texas and Nebraska.
The University of Missouri signee bested the effort of 40 2-1/4 she posted in winning the Great Southwest meet at the University of New Mexico on June 2. It was also well in front of the 39-6 that won Williams the state title.
Texas’ Jennifer Madu won the event with a jump of 42-9 3/4, followed by Florida’s Ciarra Brewer (42-9), East Oakland’s Sasha Wallace (41-8 3/4) and Nebraska’s Ellie Ewere (41-6 1/2). While Wallace just finished her junior year of high school, Madu is headed to Texas A&M University, Brewer to the University of Florida and Ewere is committed to the University of Nebraska.
A variety of other Colorado athletes competed in the three-day meet, including George Washington phenom Chyna Ries and Valor Christian’s Marybeth Sant.
