DENVER | Junior Brandon Pearcy dominated the distance events at Saturday at the Cowboy Invitational and it helped his Vista PEAK Prep boys track team easily outpace the rest of the field on a chilly day at All-City Stadium.
Pearcy — a Class 5A state meet qualifier in cross country in the fall — collected event titles in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters to hoard points for the Bison, who racked up 110 on the day with a total of five victories and put plenty of distance between themselves and runner-up Strasburg (87 points).
Senior Joshua Gallien added another victory in the 200 meter dash, while Vista PEAK Prep also claimed the 4×100 meter relay.
Pearcy’s tightest victory of the day came in the 800 meters, when he crossed the finish line in a season-best 2 minutes, 1.09 seconds, which put him just in front of Evergreen’s Aiden Loftus (2:01.35). The other two races came with little difficulty as Pearcy took the 1,600 meters in 4:36.99 for a nearly 12-second win and was the only runner in the field under 10 minutes in the 3,200 meters as he won handily in 9:59.59.
Gallien held off a challenge from Mountain Vista’s Joel Vondee-Quartey in the finals of the 200, as he got to the line in 21.48 seconds to Vondee-Quartey’s 21.63. He got disqualified in the prelims of the 400, which he had a good chance of winning.
The Bison’s 4×100 meter relay team turned in a season-best time of 43.04 seconds to defeat another Aurora area challenger — Gateway — which ran 43.74.
