LAKEWOOD | Halfway through the abbreviated Class 5A state track meet, things got good quickly for the Grandview girls track team.
Bolstered by a slew of state championship-winning performances Saturday at Jefferson County Stadium, the Wolves piled up 70 points going into Sunday’s final day as they take aim at the program’s first state title.
Cherokee Trail sits in second after one day with 31 points, Mountain Vista is third with 29 and defending state champion Fort Collins holds 26 points.
Senior Brie Oakley set the tone for Grandview with a Colorado record-setting performance in the 3,200 meter run and the wins kept coming fast and furious after that, with junior Kylee Harr following up her leg on the state title-winning 800 meter sprint medley relay with the high jump crown.
In addition to the sprint medley, the Wolves were victorious in the 4×200 relay — with freshmen Lily Williams and Kameryn Brown running on each of the winning teams, plus Harr and Jordyn Moore on the sprint medley and Michaela Onyenwere and Kennede Brown on the 4×200 — and collected a number of other prime podium spots along the way.
Junior Sydnee Larkin wasn’t a fan of the abbreviated four-jump allowance in the triple jump, but she managed to repeat as state champion in the event to pace Cherokee Trail, while junior Chian DeLoach finished fourth in the same event to aid the Cougars.
Following Grandview across the finish line in the sprint medley relay was Eaglecrest and Rangeview as Aurora swept the top three spots in the event.
The Raiders used the performance as the center piece of a 15-point first day that also included a runner-up finish in the 200 meters from sophomore Dawnielle Lewis.
Eaglecrest captured eight points, Overland seven, Smoky Hill four and Hinkley 2 (from Sierra Arceneaux in the 200 meters) on opening day.
Vista PEAK collected a single point courtesy of freshman sprinter Raina Branch to get on the 4A scoreboard.
