GREENWOOD VILLAGE | With designs on challenging for a bigger prize next week at the Class 5A state track meet, the Cherokee Trail boys took a title Saturday.

Fueled by five event championships, the Cougars amassed 132 points at the conclusion of the two-day Centennial League Championship meet at Stutler Bowl for a relatively comfortable victory in a field full of a lot of quality teams.

Senior Ruben Estrada swept the throwing events to pace Cherokee Trail, which also got a victory in the 1,600 meters from Rylan Wallace and Kellen Monestime in the 300 meter hurdles and Sean Roberts in the triple jump. Monestime’s time of 37.93 seconds in the hurdles stands as the top mark in 5A going into the state meet.

Another Colorado best performance — which came from senior Hayden Blubaugh — paced Grandview to a fourth-place finish. Blubaugh uncorked a long jump of 23 feet, 5 inches that puts him at the forefront of the 5A ranks ahead of the state meet at Jeffco Stadium and provided the Wolves’ only league event victory.

Junior Mason Brown’s come-from-behind win in the 3,200 meter run and Josiah Barker’s 14-foot pole vault produced the two victories for Eaglecrest, which came up just two points behind Grandview in fifth place.

Junior Cameron Murray had an outstanding league championship for Overland, as he claimed both the 200 and 400 meters, the latter of which put him at the forefront of 5A with his time of 48.26 seconds. Senior Paulison Fasu’s victory in the 110-meter hurdles gave the Trailblazers a third league title.
