BROOMFIELD | The Cherokee Trail boys and girls track teams take the taste of victory into their spring break, as both won team championships at Saturday’s Broomfield Shootout.
Both teams absolutely ran away from their respective fields — 30 girls teams, 26 boys teams — as the Cougars outdistanced runner-up Loveland 127.9-62 on the girls side, while the boys had a 92-66.33 edge on Fossil Ridge in the final team standings.

Cherokee Trail didn’t compete in the Centennial League Spring Break Qualifier two days earlier, but had plenty of outstanding performances in competition at Elizabeth Kennedy Stadium.
The Cougars won three of the five relay events on the girls side — 4×100, 4×200 and 800 sprint medley — and had big days from a number of individuals.
Freshman Shayna Yon won both the 100-meter dash (12.16 seconds) and the long jump (18 feet, 1/4 inch) individually and ran the anchor leg on the 4×100 relay, while junior Daisha Stanley took first place in the 400 meters (59.39) and anchored the sprint medley relay victory.
Freshman Haley Rogers ran on all three winning relays, while junior Hannah Sparks placed second in both jumping events and finished off the 4×200 relay win.
Senior Devin Arnold had a hand in two of the three victories for the Cherokee Trail boys, as he won the long jump with an effort of 22 feet, 1/2 inch and led off the Cougars’ winning 4×200 relay team. Arnold added a fourth-place result in the 200 meters for good measure.
Junior MarKeith Bailey ran on the first-place 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams, as well as the third-place 4×400 unit in addition to placing seventh in the 100 meters.
Cherokee Trail is next scheduled to compete in Legend Track Clash at 8 a.m. April 6 at Sports Authority Stadium in Parker.
