AURORA | Hinkley track & field athletes continue to benefit from the legacy of Bob Caviness.

Aside from the tradition the late track & field and cross country coach established in the early years of the school, his memory is carried on in the form of a yearly scholarship handed out at the annual track meet bearing his name.

At the 59th annual event on Saturday, Hinkley senior Damian Lopez was the latest to receive the Caviness Memorial Scholarship, typically a $500 award selected and given out by Caviness’ son and daughter, Craig and Marla.

A pair of Aurora Central athletes, Shakir Muhamed and Abelard Palmer, received the Caviness scholarship last season, but Lopez was this year’s only winner.

Lopez, a distance runner, posted fifth-place finishes in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs to help the Hinkley boys win the Caviness team championship for a third straight season. The Thunderbirds also won the girls championship for the fourth straight season.
