AURORA | Reuel Isaac had his hands full limping around on crutches at the conclusion of the 2013 Robert F. Caviness Invitational track meet.

On Saturday — a little more than a year later and recovered from a torn anterior cruciate ligament — a healthy Isaac clutched the boys championship plaque after the 58th edition of the annual Aurora get-together, started by the late Bob Caviness, a former Hinkley coach.

The Thunderbirds blew away the competition in both the boys and girls standings at the meet, sweeping the titles for the second consecutive season.

Even without injured freshman sprint standout Teaggan Ilela, Hinkley’s girls won seven events and racked up 234 points, a whopping 116 more than runner-up Prairie View. The T-Birds’ boys got wins in the 200 and 400 meters from Mateo Waddles and finished in the top two of all five relay events on their way to 174 points, well in front of runner-up Vista PEAK, which scored 88 behind a pair of wins from senior Ayo Sanusi.

In addition to the memory of Caviness, the memory of one of its central figures of the history of the meet — the late Gene Bump — permeated the day.

Bump drove himself to the meet at the age of 97 last year, but passed away in October.

Tournament organizers Marla and Craig Caviness, the children of Bob Caviness, presented annual scholarship awards to a pair of Aurora Central athletes, Shakir Muhamed and Abelard Palmer. Ten athletes from four APS schools submitted applications for the scholarships.
