YPSILANTI, Mich. | Gateway High School senior-to-be Devundrick Walker wrapped up his trip to the 2013 AAU Junior Olympics on the medal podium Thursday.
Running in the men’s 17-18 1,500 meters at Rynearson Stadium on the campus of Eastern Michigan University, Walker crossed the finish line in 4 minutes, 8.76 seconds to capture fifth place in a field of 54 top prep runners from across the country.
Walker — running for the International Flight club team he’s been training with all summer in Austin, Texas — set a personal best time in the event, shaving more than a second off his seed time of 4:09.85 in the process.
A time of 4:03.29 led to a win for Charles Jones of Ferguson, Mo., who also topped the 800 meter final on Wednesday in which Walker placed 11th.
