The Eaglecrest softball team took over sole possession of first place in the Centennial League with only a handful of games left, keyed by a 9-6 win over Cherokee Trail Sept. 23.

Mikayla Faulkner hit a tie-breaking two-run home run in the sixth inning and the Raptors scored eight times in the final two innings to rally from a 4-1 deficit and stun the Cougars, who postseason hopes faded.

Eaglecrest downed co-league leader Mullen 8-2 on Sept. 24 to take the top spot alone.

• Jorge Rangel scored two goals in the last eight minutes, putting the finishing touches on the Grandview boys soccer team’s 4-1 rout of Cherry Creek Sept. 24.

Alex Simpson and Rhys De Sota also scored for the Wolves — who beat Arapahoe earlier — and put themselves in prime position in the Centennial League.

• Rangeview is Aurora’s only undefeated boys soccer team after a 2-1 win over Thornton Sept. 24.

• The Overland gymnastics team made a strong statement at the Overland Invitational Sept. 21.

Competing on their home floor, the co-op squad of athletes from around Aurora finished with a team score of 181.375 points, finishing comfortably ahead of Broomfield — the defending Class 5A state champion — which scored 180.425.

Devin Bundas claimed the only event win for Overland with a 9.575 on the uneven bars.

• Three Aurora football teams got to 3-1 with wins, as Grandview blew out Mullen 51-24 on Sept. 19 — behind Ben Marshall’s 242 yards rushing and 4 TDs — while Eaglecrest rolled Fossil Ridge 49-7 Sept. 20, with Aaric Witt throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for two more and Gateway blew past Westminster 34-14 Sept. 21 as Isaac Fuqua rushed for four touchdowns and 171 yards.
