AURORA | The Cherry Creek School District and Regis Jesuit went on spring break, but there was still plenty of prep sports action between March 28-April 4:
• Smoky Hill pitcher JR McDermott posted Aurora’s first no-hitter of the baseball season on April 4 in a 10-0 five-inning victory over Denver East.
The sophomore right-hander walked three and struck out three, but didn’t allow a base hit to the Angels as he improved his record to 2-1 and lowered his ERA through 16 innings to a sparkling 1.75.
Senior Trey Reineke went 2-for-2 and scored three runs for the Buffaloes, who improved to an Aurora-best 5-1 on the season. TJ Jakopec ended the game with an RBI single to bring home Grayson Heath and invoke the 10-run mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth inning.
• Overland continued its strong start on the baseball diamond with a 12-5 non-league road victory at George Washington April 1, sending it into a spring break hiatus at 4-2.
Christian Collins pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory for Overland, which plated seven runs in the fifth inning to break a 5-5 tie.
Dario Villagomez and Joseph Sanchez had three hits each for the Trailblazers, who already are approaching last season’s win total of six with 13 games left.
• Cherokee Trail swept the boys and girls team titles at the Broomfield Shootout track meet March 30 at Elizabeth Kennedy Stadium.
Both teams absolutely ran away from their respective fields — 30 girls teams, 26 boys teams — as the Cougars outdistanced runner-up Loveland 127.9-62 on the girls side, while the boys had a 92-66.33 edge on runner-up Fossil Ridge.
The Cougars won three of the five relay events on the girls side — 4×100, 4×200 and 800 sprint medley — and had big days from a number of individuals.
Freshman Shayna Yon won both the 100-meter dash (12.16 seconds) and the long jump (18 feet, 1/4 inch) individually and ran the anchor leg on the 4×100 relay, while junior Daisha Stanley took first place in the 400 meters (59.39) and anchored the sprint medley relay victory.
Freshman Haley Rogers ran on all three winning relays, while junior Hannah Sparks placed second in both jumping events and finished off the 4×200 relay win.
Senior Devin Arnold had a hand in two of the three victories for the Cherokee Trail boys, as he won the long jump with an effort of 22 feet, 1/2 inch and led off the Cougars’ winning 4×200 relay team. Arnold added a fourth-place result in the 200 meters for good measure.
Junior MarKeith Bailey ran on the first-place 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams, as well as the third-place 4×400 unit in addition to placing seventh in the 100 meters.
• The Gateway baseball team finished 2-1 at the Gateway Invitational tournament with a 5-4 victory over Montbello on March 30.
Miguel Gonzalez pitched a complete game and Chris Cronsell had three hits and drove in two runs for the Olys (3-6), who beat Poudre 12-11 the previous day.
• Cherokee Trail finished 1-2 at the Greenway Festival in the Phoenix area with a 13-7 victory over Moon Valley (Ariz.) on March 30. Michael Dziurgot scored four runs, Ben John drove in a pair and
Jordan Smith plated three in support of winner Andy Schwulst.
• Grandview finished 2nd in both the boys and girls team standings at the Centennial League Spring Break Qualifier on March 28 at Stutler Bowl.
Six teams competed — minus Cherokee Trail and Arapahoe — and Cherry Creek took both team titles, followed by the Wolves.
Grandview’s girls won three relays and got individual wins from Stephanie Nwagwu (long jump) and Alexis Ferguson (shot put). Girls results, here.
Shayne Watson (200 meters), Triston Sisneros (110-meter hurdles), Kossi Tchenawou (300-meter hurdles and JR Smith (high jump) posted wins for the Wolves on the boys side. Boys results, here.
• Cherry Creek posted its second straight walk-off victory against Grandview with a 7-6 win on March 28 at Cherry Creek High School.
The Wolves lost to the Bruins in walk-off fashion in last season’s Class 5A state baseball championship series in the last at-bat and it happened again in Grandview’s first game of the new season.
Reece Weber homered, Rory Stewart had two hits and Jake Thurston and Brendan Hays each tied the game with late RBI for the Wolves.
