WEDNESDAY, DEC. 15: The Overland boys basketball team got into the win column for the first time this season with a 69-50 victory over visiting Rocky Mountain. Four Trailblazers cracked double figures with Victor Harp leading the way with 15 points, followed by Marzouq Abdur-Razaaq with 13, Jayden Kelsey with 12 and Mohamed Altaieb with 10. …The Rangeview girls basketball team defeated Denver East for the second time in 11 days with a 55-49 home victory that moved the Raiders to 6-1. …The Eaglecrest girls basketball team prepared for its trip to Las Vegas to play in the Tarkanian Classic with a 41-38 home victory over Denver South. Five players combined to score all of the Raptors’ points with Nia McKenzie leading the way with 11, while Haley Esser had nine and Shyann Farbes and Laci Roffle contributed eight apiece. …The Cherokee Trail girls basketball team is now 3-4 after a 65-44 home win over Northfield.

TUESDAY, DEC. 14: The Smoky Hill girls basketball team won just two games last season, but the Buffaloes already have five victories this season after a 62-59 win over Bear Creek. Jazlyn Lindsey’s free throw broke a tie and freshman Yamoni Perez capped a 21-point with two more free throws for the winning margin. …In a girls swimming dual meet that saw a total of 26 5A state qualifying performances, Cherokee Trail fell to Arapahoe 110-76 despite two wins from Skylar Brgoch, one apiece from Ella Drakulich and Emme Metzmaker and a victory from the 400 yard freestyle relay. …Also in the pool, the Grandview girls swim team dropped a 98-87 dual with Cherry Creek in a meet filled with state-qualifying swims. The Wolves won the meet-opening 200 yard medley relay and Megan Doubrava, Amelia Brown and diver Madeline Hemstreet posted individual event wins. …Connor Yslas scored 14 points and Logan Brook and Austin Gibson had 12 apiece as the Cherokee Trail boys basketball team — 1-13 a year ago — moved to 4-1 with a 65-51 win over Heritage. …Mostapaha Elmoutaouakkil had 24 points and Jayden Washington 20, but it wasn’t enough as Eaglecrest fell at ThunderRidge 78-62 in a battle of ranked 5A boys basketball teams.

MONDAY, DEC. 13: Double digit points from Hana Belibi (15), Savitri Jackson (14) and Sophia Meyer (11) weren’t enough for the Regis Jesuit girls basketball team in a 74-57 loss to rival Mullen. …Carter Schick had two goals, Ben Romero had two assists and Gage Bussey stopped 13 shots in the net as the Regis Jesuit ice hockey team streaked past Dakota Ridge 6-1. …The Gateway girls basketball team went 1-8 last season, but picked up its third win of this season with a 64-25 defeat of Alameda as Aaliyah Taylor scored 22 points and Jameri Hartsfield went for 15.

SATURDAY, DEC. 11: The Grandview boys wrestling team swept five matches at its own dual, which included a championship dual win over Chaparral that was clinched on a pin by 220-pounder Petro Ivanusa in the final match. … The Vista PEAK girls basketball team finished as the runner-up of the Demon Invitational at Glenwood Springs H.S. after a 55-49 loss to Canon City in the final. …The Regis Jesuit ice hockey team prevailed 5-4 over Cherry Creek in the first of two meetings of the local powers. Ian Beck and Robbie Dembeck scored two goals apiece for the Raiders, while Andrew Capra (Eaglecrest), Ayden Schmidt (Cherokee Trail), Brenden Wolff (Cherokee Trail) and Dalton Berkey scored for the co-op Bruins. …The Eaglecrest girls wrestling team finished second at its own invitational, while Vista PEAK finished 6th, Overland 11th and Regis Jesuit 14th. Blythe Cayko (Eaglecrest) and Alexis Segura (Regis Jesuit) won their weights, 185 and 127 pounds, respectively. …Chance Mathews and Derek Glenn Jr. won championships to help the Cherokee Trail boys wrestling team to third at the Harold McCray Invitational. …Greg Brooks and Jaylen Banister of Rangeview and Cherokee Trail’s Kyle Stevens were champions at the Vista PEAK Bison Invitational. …The state spirit championship wrapped up at the World Arena in Colorado Springs and two teams from Aurora schools claimed state titles. Eaglecrest rose to the top of the state in the Hip-Hop competition for the second time in three seasons (and pushed its combined total of cheer and dance titles all-time to 13) with a score of 95.625, while Cherokee Trail’s score of 96.525 landed it the Jazz crown for the second time three seasons as well.

FRIDAY, DEC. 10: The Smoky Hill boys basketball team lost a 4th quarter lead and fell to top-ranked ThunderRidge 93-86 in overtime in the semifinals of the Chaparral/ThunderRidge Tip-Off Tournament despite 23 points from Brayden Maldonado and 19 from Rickey Mitchell. …The Eaglecrest boys basketball team finished as the Fairview Festival runner-up with a 75-66 loss to Denver East. …Tatiyanna Nix’s steal and jumper in the final 20 seconds stood up as the Overland girls basketball team topped Aurora Central 52-50. Nix had 17 points to pace the ‘Blazers, while Fabenne Tadesse led the Trojans with 15. …Cai’Reis Curby and Khafre Garrett-Mills tallied 18 points apiece and the Aurora Central boys basketball team outlasted DSST Byers 61-60 in overtime. …Eaglecrest finished as the Class 5A All-Girls Cheer state champion with a score of 90.375 points to top a field that included Grandview in the runner-up spot and Cherokee Trail in sixth. Combined with dance, Eaglecrest moved into a tie for the all-time most state championships with 12.

THURSDAY, DEC. 9: Senior KK Stroter scored twice in the final 15 seconds to lift the Rangeview boys basketball team to a 69-65 win over Overland in a game that saw junior Marzouq Abdur-Razaaq scored 19 to lead four ‘Blazers in double figures. …TaRea Fulcher scored 18 points and fellow junior Archer VanSickle 16 as the Regis Jesuit boys basketball team staved off a challenge from Boulder in a 64-52 win. …The Eaglecrest girls wrestling team topped Overland 45-6 in a tri-dual that also included Denver North. …The Cherokee Trail girls swim team topped Mullen 147-35 in a Centennial League dual that saw sophomore Emme Metzmaker and freshman Ella Drakulich win twice apiece for the Cougars. …Smoky Hill finished second and Rangeview eighth in the Class 5A/4A Gameday competition on the opening day of the state spirit championships at the World Arena.
