A hefty slate of boys basketball is in store Jan. 22, highlighted by some significant matchups in league play for Aurora teams. In a big Continental League meeting, Regis Jesuit plays host to Legend, while the Centennial League schedule includes Cherokee Trail playing host to Overland and unbeaten Eaglecrest paying a visit to rival Grandview. Both of those league meetings tip off at 7 p.m. following a 5:30 p.m. contest between the schools’ girls teams and a 4 p.m. Unified contest. Vista PEAK plays on the road against a tough Skyview team in Colorado 7 play.

The Grandview wrestling team opens the Top of the Rockies tournament Jan. 22, as the Wolves enter yet another grueling competition during its challenging season. The multi-state, multi-classification tournament runs two days at Centaurus High School in Lafayette. Cherokee Trail competes in its third out-of-state tournament of the season when it is in action in Chadron, Nebraska, Jan. 22-23. In other wrestling action, the Smoky Hill Classic is slated for Jan. 23 with a field that includes Eaglecrest, Rangeview and Vista PEAK, while Gateway, Hinkley and Regis Jesuit head to the Northglenn Norse Invitational and Aurora Central is in action at Kennedy.

The unbeaten Cherry Creek co-op ice hockey team plays top-ranked Monarch at 3:15 p.m. Jan. 23 as two of the state’s dwindling number of unbeaten teams — and the teams that met in last season’s state championship game — square off at Family Sports Center. The Bruins play the second game of a back-to-back after playing on the road against Columbine the previous night at the The Edge, while also undefeated Regis Jesuit follows them onto the FSC ice on Jan. 23 at 5:45 p.m. against Mullen after also playing Jan. 22 against Standley Lake, also on home ice.

Eaglecrest plays host to Denver East in a significant boys basketball meeting Jan. 25, as the Raptors again put their unbeaten record on the line against the explosive Angels in a game slated for a 7 p.m. tip off. Denver East plays host to another Aurora power, Regis Jesuit, at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 in a game rescheduled from before winter break.

The Grandview girls basketball team plays host to ThunderRidge at 7 p.m. Jan. 26, as the Wolves take on the Grizzlies in a meeting of teams ranked in the top three in Class 5A in the latest Associated Press media poll. Undefeated Grandview dropped a six-point decision last season to ThunderRidge, which is 12-1 to open this season. In Continental League play, Regis Jesuit plays host to Douglas County at 7 p.m.

The Aurora Public Schools wrestling championship is decided Jan. 27 with Rangeview playing host to Aurora Central at 7 p.m. The Raiders and Trojans both emerged as the top teams from previous dual meets with the other three APS programs: Gateway, Hinkley and Vista PEAK. While Aurora Central and Rangeview face off for first, Vista PEAK will play host to Gateway and Hinkley in a double dual.
