OVERLAND (SPRING 2024)

TRACK & FIELD: A small contingent for the boys track team made a huge amount of noise at the 5A state meet, as three individuals — senior Wondame Davis Jr., junior Jarrius Ward and sophomore Zumari Stivers — combined to earn 38 points and place coach Bruce Reed’s Overland team fifth. Ward won the discus championship with a state meet-record throw of 203 feet, 4 inches, and also placed second in the shot put, while Davis Jr. won gold in the long jump along three top-eight finishes and Stivers was fourth in the 110 meter hurdles. Ward (discus) and Stivers (300 meter hurdles) were Centennial League champions as well. The Overland girls placed eighth at the Centennial League Championships.

BOYS SWIMMING: Junior Chad Hamilton placed 18th in the 1-meter diving competition at the Class 5A boys swimming state meet to earn three points, which put Overland (which also had state qualifiers in seniors Alex Czyzowicz and Eric Kelly in addition to two relay teams) 28th in the final standings with a total of three points. Coach Melissa Lindsey’s Trailblazers finished seventh at the Centennial “A” League Championships.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Coach Diane Swan’s boys volleyball team finished 7-15 in its third varsity season and had an All-Centennial League first team selection in senior Ahmed Diallo, who started strong, but missed much of the season due to injury. Junior Trevor O’Shea got an all-league second team nod.

GIRLS SOCCER: The girls soccer team bumped its win total up one from 2023 with a 3-10-2 season that concluded with a victory over the Far Northeast Warriors. Seniors Jemely Hernandez and Maya Richman earned the Trailblazers’ all-league accolades as they were voted onto the All-Centennial League second team.

BASEBALL: Coach Mike Bega’s baseball team went winless in 20 contest with two All-Centennial League performers on the roster. Junior Scott Dewey — who racked up 78 strikeouts in 45 innings to rank in Class 5A’s top 10 — made the all-league second team, while freshman pitcher Humberto Perez made the honorable mention list.

GIRLS TENNIS: Veteran coach Arlandus Lowe had a massive influx of young players into the lower levels of the program to create optimism for the future, while the varsity (which included just four senior regulars) finished 3-9 in dual matches.
