AURORA | With impeccable timing as usual, the spring prep sports season arrived Monday on the heels of a significant snowstorm with more to come.

Tryouts in the last of three prep sports seasons on the school calendar made up of nine sports — baseball, girls soccer, boys swimming, track & field, boys and girls lacrosse, girls tennis and girls golf — were given the green light by the Colorado High School Activities Association, though all but swimming would be out of their natural element indoors to begin practice.

Girls golf and girls tennis get the first OK to begin the regular season on Thursday, while the remaining sports are allowed to scrimmage for the first time on Feb. 28 and open the regular season on March 5.

Aurora’s defending Class 5A state champions from last fall are all from Regis Jesuit in boys lacrosse, boys swimming and girls golf.

The winter prep sports season is winding to a close with the Class 5A state swim meet a week ago and the Class 5A/4A state wrestling tournament this past weekend at the Pepsi Center, while boys and girls basketball and ice hockey playoffs begin this week.
