Softball: Eaglecrest rallies yet again, edges Grandview to repeat atop Centennial League

CENTENNIAL | The Eaglecrest softball team saved its best rally for last.

With the Centennial League championship on the line, the Raptors rallied from a three-run deficit against visiting rival Grandview on Oct. 4, plating four runs in their final two at-bats for an emotional 6-5 victory.

Junior Taylor Menard hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and sophomore Sarah Bushman finished the game with her third inning of scoreless relief as coach Yvette Hendrian’s Eaglecrest team won its second consecutive league championship.

Brooke Morris doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs for the Raptors, who finished the regular season 17-2 overall and finished 13-1 in the Centennial League, avenging its only loss to Grandview (15-4, 11-3) in the process.

Junior Emily Supercynski doubled and tripled and drove in a pair of runs for coach Dave Thies’ Wolves, who couldn’t hold a 5-2 lead they had in the fifth inning after back-to-back-to-back doubles by Loghan Thomas, Supercynski and Abigail Mork. Earlier, a two-run double by Jessica Alexander had put Grandview ahead 3-2 in the fourth inning.

Starter Courtney Browne allowed two runs in the fifth inning, but left with a one-run lead. Reliever Aubrey Pickett got the first out of the sixth inning, but walked Eaglecrest pinch hitter Savannah Lewis ahead of the two-run shot over the left field fence by Menard, who had also homered in the previous game against Cherokee Trail.

The offenses were in fine form in a game that featured 11 extra-base hits in all, including 10 doubles.

Both teams advance to the 5A postseason and will await their seedings in regional tournaments Oct. 12.
