COMMERCE CITY | The Colorado Rapids loaned Rangeview High School graduate and homegrown signee Davy Armstrong to Phoenix FC of the USL Professional Division.
The Rapids — one of the hottest teams in Major League Soccer with a six-game winning streak — sent the 21-year-old Armstrong to Phoenix for its final three games of the season. He suited up for the Wolves and played 65 minutes in their 3-1 loss to the Harrison City Islanders Wednesday night at Reach 11 Stadium in Phoenix.

“This is a great opportunity for Davy to play in competitive matches, and we’re looking forward to seeing how he does in Phoenix,” Rapids Technical Director Paul Bravo said in a statement from the team. “He is a talented player and we hope this experience will help him continue to push for first team minutes when he returns.”
Armstrong — a multiple-time Aurora Sentinel All-City selection who tallied 53 goals and nearly 30 assists in his career at Rangeview — entered the Rapids’ academy program in 2007 and eventually signed with the big club in 2010, passing up a chance to play at the University of Washington.
Since his signing, Armstrong has played primarily with the Rapids Reserves, but made his MLS debut on Oct. 27, 2012. He appeared in eight matches with the Rapids Reserves this season, logging 598 minutes as a defender and midfielder.
Here’s a Q&A with Armstrong from the May issue of the Aurora magazine.
Phoenix FC’s loss to Harrison eliminated it from a spot in the USL Pro playoffs, but the Wolves have two games remaining on the schedule: Aug. 10 against Charleston and Aug. 16 against Rochester, both at Reach 11 Stadium.
