COMMERCE CITY | The Colorado Rapids’ first homegrown signee remained with the team Thursday, when Rangeview High School graduate Davy Armstrong signed a new contract.

Armstrong originally signed a contract with the hometown Major League Soccer franchise in 2010 fresh out of Rangeview, bypassing a scholarship offer to the University of Washington.

A torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee ended Armstrong’s season last year while he was on loan from the Rapids, but the 22-year-old defender has returned to health and has a new deal with the team. According to league and team policies, contract terms aren’t disclosed, but Armstrong is ready to get back on the pitch.

“I’m happy to have signed a new deal with the Rapids, and will be working hard to return to match fitness,” Armstrong said in a statement issued by the team. “This is an opportunity to try to establish myself in the team, and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Armstrong saw his first MLS action in a game against Houston Dynamo on Oct. 27, 2012, and has also appeared in U.S. Open Cup and CONCACAF Champions League matches. He also played with Phoenix FC of the USL Professional Division last season when he was injured.

Paul Bravo, Colorado’s Vice President of Soccer Operations, is pleased that Armstrong is back and ready to contribute.

“Davy has done a lot of work to recover from his knee injury, and we’re thrilled that he’s back to full health,” Bravo said. “He was out of contract following last season, but stayed without throughout his rehabilitation process. Now that he’s back to full health, we’re happy to have the additional depth that he gives us, and will give him a chance to earn a spot as he continues to develop and improve as a player.”

Here’s a Q&A with Armstrong from last summer in Aurora Magazine.

Armstrong tallied 53 goals and nearly 30 assists in his career at Rangeview and made the Aurora Sentinel All-City Boys Soccer Team on multiple occasions.
