Signings: Franklin among a big group at Regis Jesuit as early signing day arrives

One of the very few things Missy Franklin hasn’t done yet in her outstanding swimming career is swim in a college meet.

The Olympic star and Regis Jesuit senior got close to that goal when she signed a national athletic letter of intent to swim for the University of California-Berkeley at a large ceremony Nov. 14 at Regis Jesuit High School.

Franklin — who won four gold medals and a bronze at the Summer Olympics in London — is ready for the next step in her career, swimming in college. She’s turned down lucrative endorsement deals for years for the chance to do just that and she’ll join Cal, the defending NCAA champion.

Still undecided is whether Franklin will swim with the Regis Jesuit girls in the winter season, which begins Nov. 28.

Five Division I lacrosse players also signed at Regis Jesuit, as Courtney Gielow will join Franklin at Cal, while Kathryn Blumhardt and Erin Schilmoeller head to Oregon, Erin Sungelo to Yale and Maddy Krause to Colorado.

In some smaller ceremonies, a number of Regis Jesuit Boys Division athletes also signed, including swimmers Clark Smith (Texas) and Zach Suter (Seton Hall) and lacrosse player Brian Wegner (Denver).

Two weeks before the start of the basketball season, a number of big name Aurora boys and girls hoops standouts signed.

Prized recruit Carlton Hurst — the Aurora Sentinel’s Player of the Year for the 2011-12 season — of Aurora Central signed with Colorado State in an afternoon ceremony, while Grandview point guard Eric Garcia signed earlier with Wofford, as did Cherokee Trail big man Roderick Bernstine with Denver.

On the girls side, Grandview standout Adaeze Obinnah is confirmed with Rice, while teammates Tasha Edge (Oklahoma Baptist) and Erin Kemp (Black Hills State) also inked their offers.
