AURORA | The first meeting of the season between the Regis Jesuit and Cherry Creek co-op ice hockey team was a low-scoring overtime affair with a total of four goals scored.

The rematch Friday evening at Family Sports Center saw the Raiders score nearly that many in the opening period alone in a 7-1 Class 5A Metro Division victory over the Bruins.

Senior Luke Damrath, junior Parker Brinner and sophomore Alexander Warot all tallied goals in the opening period for coach Terry Ott’s Regis Jesuit team, which had seven different goal scorers on the night as it improved to 10-2-2 on the season.

Junior Austin Katz scored the lone goal in the second period for coach Jeff Mielnicki’s Cherry Creek team, which is 10-4-2 overall after its second straight defeat.

Seniors Edison Barnes, Alexander Gregory and Reece Peterson and junior Harry Sorenson also had goals for Regis Jesuit, while freshman netminder Easton Sparks made 20 saves.

The teams played to a 2-2 deadlock back on Dec. 9 on the same ice, but the rematch was different from the start. Damrath tallied a goal within the first minute of play. Brinner scored what would hold up as the game-winner midway through the period, while Warot poked home a rebound of his own shot turned aside by Cherry Creek goalie Jack Ryan (Cherokee Trail) to make it 3-0 before the break.

Katz made it a two-goal game early in the third period before Gregory restored the three-goal edge less than three minutes later.

Power play goals from Peterson and Barnes added to the lead in the third and Sorensen capped the scoring.

Regis Jesuit returns to action Saturday at 6 p.m. at the South Suburban Ice Arena with a matchup against rival Ralston Valley, while Cherry Creek’s next contest comes at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 against Denver East at Big Bear Ice Arena.
