CENTENNIAL | All the fireworks in Tuesday’s matinee ice hockey matchup between Cherry Creek and Heritage happened in the final period and the Bruins had more of them.

The co-op team of district players from Cherry Creek Schools bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 3-1 victory over the Eagles at Family Sports Center for an important 5A Metro League result.

Power play goals by Riley Hunt-Bahn and Eugene Riewe in the first 4 minutes, 34 seconds, of the third period put coach Jeff Mielnicki’s Cherry Creek team in the lead and Payne Pent answered Heritage’s goal late in the period for some insurance as the Bruins improved to 3-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

A man advantage spilled between the first and second periods for the Eagles (2-2), who were unable to convert, but Cherry Creek took advantage of its extra attacker to start the third period. Hunt-Bahn finished on assists from Aidan Tucker (Cherokee Trail) and Jaymin Rolfe (Grandview) just 19 seconds into the period.

Five seconds into another power play, Riewe scored again for what turned out to be the game-winner, which came unassisted.

Hunt-Bahn assisted on Pent’s goal with just over five minutes remaining that countered a tally by the Eagles’ Saul Drantch.

Senior Nick Novodvorskiy stopped 20 of the 21 shots he saw in the net for Cherry Creek, which is off for more than a week before another big league contest, this one against Denver East on Feb. 17 at Big Bear Ice Arena.
