Ice Hockey: Regis Jesuit falls in overtime in USA Hockey National Championship game

CORAL SPRINGS, FLA. | The Regis Jesuit ice hockey team came up a goal short of its second straight USA Hockey National Championship.

Santa Margarita, Calif., claimed this season’s title with a 4-3 overtime win over the Raiders in the tournament final on Sunday morning at the SFSAC Stadium Rink.

Coach Dan Woodley’s Regis Jesuit team — last season’s national champions — rallied from a two-goal deficit after one period, as Conner Wigton and Nolan Carothers scored second-period goals, but Max Kilkuts scored his second goal 2 minutes, 1 second into overtime to lift Santa Margarita to the victory.

Brady Hall scored a power play goal to put the Raiders in the lead in the first period, only to see Santa Margarita strike for three goals — two with the man advantage — in the last six-plus minutes to take a two-goal lead into the second period.

Wigton cut the deficit in half with his seventh goal of the tournament, then Carothers cashed in another power play chance for Regis Jesuit late in the second period to tie the score at 3-3.

Neither team got the go-ahead goal in the third period, as Regis Jesuit’s Sam Harden and Santa Margarita’s Brandon Schelin stood strong in the nets.

Santa Margarita got the game-winner when Kilkuts scored on an assist from Eetu Selanne, son of Anaheim Ducks forward and NHL veteran Teemu Selanne.

Harden finished with 31 saves as the Raiders were outshot 35-17.
