CENTENNIAL | The Cherry Creek School District waited 25 years for the return of ice hockey and will have to wait a little longer for a victory.

Playing the first game under the district banner for the first time since 1987, Cherry Creek played well from the start for a team trying to mix together athletes from five different high schools, but couldn’t shake visiting Cheyenne Mountain in a 3-3 tie Saturday night at Family Sports Center.

Chase Dickinson, Mark Saxelby and Johnathan Docherty each scored for Cherry Creek, which also has players from Cherokee Trail, Eaglecrest, Grandview and Colorado Academy. Coach Dave Irish’s Bruins had one-goal leads on three occasions, only to see the shorthanded Indians find a way to answer soon after.

Goalie Carson Pavek stopped 17 of the 20 shots he faced for Cherry Creek.

The Bruins’ next chance for a victory comes on at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday when they play Air Academy at Sertich Ice Arena.
