Mabry Robinson and the Overland co-op gymnastics team put on a floor show over two days at the Class 5A state gymnastics meet.

Robinson, a junior at Smoky Hill, dazzled in the floor exercise in the state team competition Nov. 7 — in which she earned perfect 10 scores from two of the four judges for a final score of 9.950 — and followed that up with a 9.850 to win the state championship in the individual event final Nov. 9 at Thornton High School.

Robinson became the third Overland gymnast to win the floor crown in the past seven seasons, following most recently Christie Yee (2016) and Devin Bundas (2013).

Coach Lisa Sparrow’s Trailblazers had four of the top five scores on the floor exercise in the team competition and had four of the top seven placers individually with Mattea Dolan (Grandview) in fourth, Sam Demoss (Eaglecrest) in fifth and Bailey Rodriguez (Eaglecrest) in seventh.

Overland’s team floor score helped it stay in contention for the 5A state team championship with a season-best score of 187.522 points, but Pomona scored 188.550 to win its fifth consecutive 5A crown.

Robinson tied for third in the all-around competition and followed that up with places in all four individual event finals (fifth in vault and seventh in balance beam and uneven bars in addition to the state floor title), while Dolan and Demoss took sixth and seventh, respectively, in the all-around and combined for five places in the individual event finals (three for Demoss, two for Dolan).

Rodriguez had the next-highest place for Overland as she finished as the 5A runner-up on the balance beam, while Reilly Cornelius (Cherokee Trail) was the fifth team member to place in an individual event final with her fifth-place result on the beam.

Encouraging for Overland’s future is only Demoss is a senior.
