PARKER | The defending Class 5A state champion Overland gymnastics team appears on its way to finding the form it needs for the final stretch of the season.

With some key performers returning from injury, coach Lisa Sparrow’s Trailblazers’ co-op team posted a score of 181.250 points to capture the Centennial/Continental League championship in a meet contested Wednesday night at Ponderosa High School.

Senior Devin Bundas and sophomore McKenna Turbyne each earned first team all-league honors with their finish in the all-around standings and senior Kellyn Toole made the most of her return from injury to earn second team accolades to help Overland finish comfortably in front of runner-up Cherry Creek (179.325) — which won last season’s meet — for the league title.

Bundas posted a decisive victory in the uneven bars — the event she won at last season’s 5A state meet — with a score of 9.675, finished second on the balance beam (9.400) and tied for third in the floor exercise (9.525) on her way to an overall score of 37.500, second only to the 37.925 posted by Cherry Creek’s 37.925.

Turbyne ruled the floor exercise with her 9.650, placed second behind Bundas on the bars with a 9.550 and took third on the vault with her 9.150 for an overall score of 36.750; Toole — an all-around state placer last season who has missed much of the season with a right leg injury — checked in a 35.450, which put her seventh in the all-around standings.

Sophomore Madie Venegas also returned to action after missing the team’s previous competition, the Broomfield Invitational, and managed to placed in the top 7 in both the floor exercise (5th, 9.225) and balance beam (T7th, 8.775).

The Trailblazers excelled on the vault, as seven gymnasts earned first or second team or honorable mention honors on the apparatus. Devin Guttman scored a 9.100 to join Turbyne on the first team (top 5) in the event, while Bundas and Toole made second team along with Amanda Andrews and Mackenzie French and Courtney Solano got an honorable mention nod.

Genesis Hathaway earned second team all-league honors on the uneven bars and balance beam and Aumni Ashby qualified for the all-league second team on the floor exercise.

Overland is set to play host to a regional Oct. 25 that also includes Buena Vista, Columbine, Heritage, Kennedy, Pomona, Rock Canyon, Rocky Mountain, Standley Lake, Thomas Jefferson and Thompson Valley. Competition begins at noon.

The 5A state meet is set for Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at Thornton High School.
