AURORA | The Overland gymnastics team made a strong early statement at Saturday’s Overland Invitational.

Competing on their home floor, the co-op squad of athletes from around Aurora finished with a team score of 181.375 points, finishing comfortably ahead of Broomfield — the defending Class 5A state champion — which scored 180.425.

Overland — which posted the highest team scores in the vault and balance beam — had three of the top seven all-around finishers, led by senior Aimee St. Martin, whose total score of 37.050 put her in third place behind winner Olivia Solow-Iederman of Cherry Creek (37.650) and runner-up Melanie Stelling of Broomfield (37.400).

Freshman McKenna Turbyne came in sixth and junior Devin Bundas seventh in the all-around standings.

Bundas claimed the only individual event victory for the Trailblazers, as her score of 9.575 on the uneven bars gave her a narrow margin over Arvada West’s Kaitlin Kurl, who checked in at 9.550.

Junior Kellyn Toole placed second on the balance beam with a mark of 9.600, while St. Martin’s fourth (9.450) keyed Overland’s strong performance in the event.

Turbyne’s best result was a third-place finish in the vault with a score of 9.475.
