Volleyball: Shorthanded Eaglecrest rolls into state tournament with Region 2 sweep

CENTENNIAL | Playing at less than full strength, the Eaglecrest volleyball team still cruised into the Class 5A state tournament.

With only minimal playing time from standout junior outside hitter Taylor Loyd, the Raptors had little trouble with No. 35 Fairview or No. 23 Bear Creek in winning the Region 2 tournament on their home floor Saturday, securing one of the 12 berths in the Nov. 9-10 5A state tournament at the Denver Coliseum.

Eaglecrest improved to 21-3 ahead of the state tournament, which will extend a long streak for coach Tanya Bond’s team.

Loyd injured her ankle during the Raptors’ clinching victory at a season-ending tournament at Ponderosa and was held out the team’s regional opener against Fairview. Sophomore Kalee Maricle picked up some of the slack with 10 kills and Ruth Okoye and Chloe Logan had eight, while sophomore Jordyn Poulter dished out 30 assists in a 25-19, 25-18, 25-14 victory.

The Knights knocked off Bear Creek in a tight five-setter in the second match of the day, giving Eaglecrest a clear path to winning the state berth.

With Loyd playing the first two games and contributing eight kills, the Raptors rolled to a 25-15, 25-8, 25-18 victory over Bear Creek.

Okoye led the team with 11 kills, while Maricle joined Loyd with eight. Poulter notched 37 assists.
