Volleyball: Eaglecrest rallies past Grandview, wins own invitational

CENTENNIAL | The Eaglecrest volleyball team is finally getting the hang of winning its own tournament.

In 2010, the Raptors won the annual Eaglecrest Invitational for the first time since 2006 and they made it two in the past three seasons on Sept. 15, winning the 2012 tournament championship with a three-set victory over neighborhood rival Grandview, which won the 2011 title.

Led by all-tournament team selections Ruth Okoye, Jordyn Poulter and Taylor Loyd, coach Tanya Bond’s Raptors downed the Wolves 22-25, 28-26, 15-12 to finish the tournament at 4-0 — 2-0 in pool play, plus a semifinal win over Cherokee Trail in addition to the victory over Grandview — and improve to 6-1 on the young season.

With a brutal early schedule, coach Patty Childress’ Wolves came into the tournament at 0-3, but went 3-0 in pool play, swept Arapahoe in the semifinals and had a set lead on Eaglecrest in the championship match before falling.

Senior Cat Denney and sophomore Haley Mclaren were selected to the all-tournament team for Grandview.

Cherokee Trail was off to a 6-0 start to the 2012 season and coach Terry Miller’s squad got to 9-0 after sweeping through Pool 4 play before a 25-15, 25-21 loss to Eaglecrest in the semifinals.

The Cougars rebounded, however, ripping Arapahoe 25-17, 25-18 in the third-place match. Cherokee Trail was seventh at the tournament in 2011.

Sophomore Sidney Wicks was picked to the all-tournament team.

Notes: The tournament was originally scheduled for 12 teams, but one dropped out, which put Eaglecrest in a three-team pool along with Colorado Springs Christian School and Platte Valley. The other three pools each had four teams.
