AURORA | It took the Cherokee Trail girls volleyball team a set to get settled against rival Grandview Tuesday night, but the Cougars reeled off three straight set wins for a 3-1 victory over the rival Wolves.

Coach Amber Cornett’s Cherokee Trail team had a rally come up short in its previous match — a five-set loss to Rock Canyon — but this time it made it all the way back. Grandview captured the opening set, but in the end, it was the Cougars who prevailed 19-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-13.

Junior Ella Notheisen pounded out 14 kills, while senior Kassie Cooley added 10 and junior Avery Krause dished out 33 assists in a well-rounded effort for Cherokee Trail, which improved to 6-2 and 1-0 in Centennial League play.

Coach Rob Graham’s Wolves — with a new lineup in the wake of the graduation of a large senior class class — dropped their fifth straight match and are 2-7 overall.

Cherokee Trail and Grandview have no scheduled rematch, but could meet at the end of the season in the Centennial League Challenge.

The Cougars’ next match is at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at home against Overland, while the Wolves pay a visit to Lutheran at 6 p.m. Sept. 16.
