AURORA | The Vista PEAK girls tennis team celebrated its exit from the Colorado 7 by winning the league championship tournament with a near-perfect score of 27 points April 26 at Utah Park.
Coach Simon Moorwood’s Bison — who will depart for the East Metro Athletic Conference next season in all sports except football to join the rest of the Aurora Public Schools — advanced to the championship match at all seven positions and won six of them to finish a point shy of a possible 28.
Vista PEAK finished undefeated in dual matches during the league season and continued its momentum into the tournament, at which its previous best finish was last year’s runner-up showing.
No. 2 Jordyn Probst and No. 3 Madison Thompson won singles matches, while all four doubles spots (Leisa Grumbles and Holly Edwards at No. 1, Dianna Schaaf and Natasha Thornton at No. 2, Daria Rizzone and Faith McFann at No. 3 and Kelsie Phillips and Vanessa Gomez at No. 4) all won.
Edwards and Grumbles — who played at No. 4 doubles last season — won their second Colorado 7 championship in as many seasons, while Danielle Klem’s bid for a second league crown (she won at No. 2 singles last season) came up short with a loss to Fort Morgan’s Rachel Carwin in the No. 1 singles final.
Probst lost the No. 3 singles title in a tiebreaker a year ago, but rolled to the No. 2 crown this season, while Thornton and Schaaf improved from a fourth-place result at No. 3 doubles a year ago to first at No. 2 doubles this time around.
Fort Morgan finished 1-2 in the finals against Vista PEAK and earned enough points to edge Skyview (which went 0-3 in championship matches) to place second.
Next up for Vista PEAK is another attempt securing its first berth in the 4A state tournament. The Bison head to the 4A Region 1 tournament at Kent Denver scheduled for May 4-5.
