HIGHLANDS RANCH | The Regis Jesuit girls tennis team earned a sweep of seven lines in the first round the Class 5A team state tournament, but only just avoided the same fate in Friday’s quarterfinal dual at Valor Christian.
Coach Jen Armstrong’s sixth-seeded Raiders — coming in off a 7-0 victory over No. 11 Arvada West Wednesday — got only a win from senior Rebecca Gelfer at No. 3 singles as they had their run end in the same round for the third straight season.
Gelfer earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory over the Eagles’ Anna Schouten to get Regis Jesuit in the win column, while the No. 4 doubles team of freshman Rachel Osborn and senior Sophia Simoes came up just short of joining her. Osborn and Simoes took the opening set from Valor Christian’s Juliana Carr and Josie VanHoeven, only to watch the Eagles rally to win 1-6, 6-2, 10-5.
The Raiders’ other two singles players lost in straight sets, as did doubles teams in the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions.
Regis Jesuit returns to its home court April 30 as the host team for the Class 5A Region 8 individual tournament.
