AURORA | The Regis Jesuit girls tennis team will be fully intact for the upcoming Class 5A girls tennis individual state tournament in the wake of the conclusion of Region 8 play on its home courts Thursday.
Coach Jen Armstrong’s Raiders got all three singles players and all four doubles teams earned their way through to the May 8-10 state tournament at the Denver Tennis Park, while Aurora’s other representative in the Region 8 field — Cherokee Trail — got in a doubles team.
All three Regis Jesuit singles players will go into the state bracket as regional champions, as freshman Madeline Dickey (No. 1), junior Otylia Martino (No. 2) and senior Rebecca Gelfer (No. 3) all prevailed in championship matches.
Gelfer rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Legacy’s Maci Black, while Martino was on the other end of the spectrum as she needed three sets to top Legacy’s Maci Black, which she did 6-3, 5-7, 7-5. In between was Dickey, who won a 7-5, 6-3 match with Doherty’s Joylanae Barnhill, who had knocked off top-seeded Kat Tran of Legacy in the semifinals.
Regis Jesuit also had three regional champions in the double ranks in the No. 2 team of senior Molly Goodwin and junior Helen Adams, the No. 3 duo of senior Brooklyn Craven and sophomore Abigail Puschaver and the No. 4 tandem of senior Sophia Simoes and freshman Rachel Osborn. All three doubles teams won in straight sets.
The No. 1 doubles team of senior Cait Carolan and junior Lily Beebe also made it through, but with more difficulty. The Raiders were outlasted in the regional final by Legacy’s Megan Anthony and Addie Lee (who prevailed 6-4, 2-6, 7-5), which forced them into an all-Aurora playback with the Cherokee Trail team of junior Leila Harrison and senior Elisabeth Bossart.
Harrison and Bossart had won a 6-3, 6-7, 6-0 decision over Lakewood’s Delsey Stringer and Jasmine Chang in the third-place match and got to challenge Beebe and Carolan as they had not met previously in the tournament. The Raiders earned a 6-0, 7-5 victory over the Cougars to advance.
The lone state tournament representation for coach Eric Olsen-Dufour’s Cherokee Trail team ended up being the No. 3 doubles team of freshman Lillian Wilson and Aninkaely Madeje, which lost in the final to Craven and Puschaver. The Cougars’ duo did not face a playback by virtue of a semifinal win over the Legacy team that placed third.
Cherokee Trail’s other regional placers were the No. 4 doubles team of junior Samantha McFann and sophomore Chloe Wyszinski (third), while fourth-place finishes went to junior No. 1 singles player Riley Leeser, freshman No. 2 singles players Shiloh Salsig and the No. 2 doubles team of senior Stella Hines and junior Ava Archuleta.
