DENVER | The host Regis Jesuit girls tennis team secured spots in six of the seven championship matches at the Class 5A Region 7 tournament after the first day of play Wednesday at Colorado Athletic Club Monaco.
The Raiders will have all four doubles teams in the championship matches, which are scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday, along with No. 1 singles player Rebecca Gelfer and No. 3 singles player Otylia Martino.
Winners of the championship matches earn automatic berths into the 5A individual state tournament scheduled for May 9-11 at City Park in Denver.
Regis Jesuit’s No. 2 singles player, Mary Clare Watts, lost in the semifinals to top-seeded Keelin Sills of Pine Creek, but won her consolation match against an opponent from Greeley West to claim third place. She will be able to challenge Loveland’s Emily Rivera in a playback for state should Rivera lost to Sills in the championship match.
Hinkley and Overland joined Regis Jesuit as locals in the tournament, but did not advance to finals or third-place matches in any position.
