LOVELAND | Aurora players won several matches at the Class 5A Region 4 girls tennis tournament, but none netted berths in the 5A state tournament.

Grandview, Rangview and Eaglecrest combined for five top-four places at the two-day, weather-delayed tournament at North Shore Park, however the majority of the two state spots in the three singles and four doubles brackets went to team champion Ralston Valley and runner-up Poudre.

Coach Jeff Ryan’s Wolves — who came out of the Centennial League as the fourth seed — finished fifth in the team standings with 20 points, as two singles players and two doubles teams placed in the top four.

Rangeview, aided by the fourth-place finish of the No. 1 doubles team of Ashleigh Larson and Catherine McGowan, came in sixth with five points and Eaglecrest took seventh with a single point.

The No. 3 doubles team of Lisa Hoong and Annabelle Lee earned the highest place for the Wolves, taking third place with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Greeley West’s Kirstine Hopwood and Kayla Hoskins.

Freshman No. 3 singles player Ryann Folk came up just short in her third place match, as she dropped a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 decision to Hannah Wagy of Greeley West.

No. 1 singles player Sarah Nguyen and the No. 4 doubles tandem of Polina Borukhova and Sonya Livitz also lost third-place matches.

Larson and McGowan recorded the only victories for Rangeview, winning twice and placing fourth. They duo lost to Castle View’s Ally Orcutt and Savvy Heebner 6-1, 6-2 in the third-place match.

Eaglecrest earned just one point, which came with junior No. 1 singles player Renee Christopher’s first-round victory over Rangeview’s Zandreya Joiner.

Christopher, who made the state tournament last season, lost in the semifinals to eventual regional champion Alex Purfield of Ralston Valley. Her bid for a second tournament bid ended with a loss to Nguyen.
