Girls Tennis: Eaglecrest No. 1 doubles teams battles way to state berth out of 5A Region 4

FORT COLLINS | Four Aurora teams headed north to the Class 5A Region 4 girls tennis regional tournament Wednesday and Thursday, but only one doubles team returned with a state berth in hand.

Eaglecrest’s No. 1 doubles team of junior Maya Johnson and sophomore Kaitlin Marler battled all the way back from a first round loss to secure their first trip to the 5A state tournament via playback and picked up half of the sixth-place total of 12 points for coach Alex Moore’s Raptors.

Cherokee Trail finished an Aurora-best third in the eight-team field, however the Cougars had no qualifiers for the May 12-14 5A state tournament at the Gates Tennis Center. Seventh-place Hinkley and eighth-place Aurora Central also were shut of state berths, which were dominated by champion Fossil Ridge and runner-up Pine Creek.

Johnson and Marler were seeded to play Fossil Ridge’s Emma Houghton and Erica Wiley in the first round Wednesday and fell by a 6-0, 6-2 count, but rebounded with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Hinkley in the playback bracket and handled a team from Castle View 6-3, 6-4 in the third-place match.

The Raptors got to challenge Pine Creek’s Tori Hillerbrandt and Sara Taylor — who lost to Houghton and Wiley in the No. 1 doubles championship match – for the right to go to state and they came away with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Moore said all of his girls played their best tennis of the season at the right time.

Cherokee Trail sophomore No. 3 singles player Tanya Solati was Aurora’s lone regional finalist, as she advanced the championship match where she was shut out by Fossil Ridge standout Bailey Koronich. Pine Creek’s Katy Scherkamp dealt Solati — who was hampered by an early ankle injury according to coach Paul Whipple — a 6-2, 6-0 loss in the playoffs that leaves Solati as the alternate.

Junior Caitlyn Daniels is the Cougars’ other alternate as she placed third at No. 2 singles and lost in the playbacks.

Cherokee Trail’s No. 3 doubles team of Kaitlyn Snider and Harsha Kalagana finished fourth.
