Girls Tennis: Regis Jesuit’s Chirico, doubles team of Christopher & Quinn earn way to 5A state tourney

GRAND JUNCTION | The Regis Jesuit girls tennis team made another long trek to Grand Junction for regionals and three players returned with state berths.

Junior No. 1 singles player Haley Chirico and the No. 2 doubles team of junior Lexi Christopher and sophomore Clare Quinn each won playback matches Friday at Colorado Mesa University to earn a place in the May 8-10 Class 5A state tournament at Gates Tennis Center.

Coach Kollman Gearheart’s Raiders finished with a total of four regional placers and captured 24 points, good enough for sixth in the eight-team field. Cherokee Trail also competed in the tournament, but finished without a team score.

Chirico — who finished third in 4A as a freshman and took the same place last season in Regis Jesuit’s debut in 5A — lost to eventual regional champion Kristen Kirby of Mountain Range in Thursday’s semifinals, but rebounded to shut out Fruita Monument’s Bronte Hayward in the third-place match.

Since she hadn’t faced Grand Junction’s Carolena Campos — who lost in straight sets to Kirby in the final — Chirico moved into a winner-take-all playback against Campos, who she outlasted 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to earn her third state berth.

Christopher and Quinn also lost in a very tight semifinal — as Littleton’s Madeline Hicks and Rachel Pearson edged them 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 — but managed to rally from a set deficit for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Fort Collins’ Emily Hay-Arthur and Erin Morrison in the third-place match.

That win pitted them against Grand Junction’s Mariah Prinster and Jessie Smith, who lost a three-set championship match, and the Raiders rolled 6-1, 6-2.

The No. 3 doubles team of junior Catherine Nemechek and freshman Catherine Stevenson and the No. 4 doubles pairing of junior Emily Wellens and sophomore Mackenzy Pedrie both won their third-place matches, but did not get a playback for state.
