BOULDER | Rangeview came away with two top-four places from the Class 5A Region 4 girls tennis tournament, though none advanced to the state tournament.
Senior Zandreya Joiner came the closest, as she advanced to Wednesday’s No. 1 singles championship match and was on the verge of breaking the Raiders’ lengthy drought without a singles player in the state tournament before dropping her final two matches.
Fairview senior Katie Li topped Joiner in straight sets in the regional final and the Rangeview senior had to turn around and play Chatfield freshman Grace Koza — winner of the third-place match — in a challenge match for the second state berth. Koza prevailed in a tight first set and then rolled in the second set to advance to the 5A state tournament May 8-10 at the Gates Tennis Center.
Joiner had an 8-2 record going into regionals.
Rangeview’s No. 2 doubles team of seniors Alex Yun and Lauren Abbott made it to the third-place match before losing to Legend as coach Steve Joiner’s Raiders finished with a fifth-place total of 16 points.
Overland and Smoky Hill also played in the tournament and tied for sixth with six points.
