GREENWOOD VILLAGE | Two Grandview doubles teams survived the challenge of the Class 5A Region 1 tournament at Cherry Creek High School to earn their way into the state tournament.

The Wolves’ No. 3 doubles team of junior Olivia Brohl and sophomore Ila Farhang and the all-freshmen No. 4 doubles team of Amanda Olsen-Dufour and Taylee Hardin both lost in championship matches to teams from Cherry Creek — which swept all three singles and all four doubles positions for a perfect team scores of 84 points — but neither had to face a playback for their trip to state.

Grandview’s two qualifiers moved into the field of the 5A state tournament, which will be played May 7-9 at Gates Tennis Center in Denver.

Coach Jeff Ryan’s Wolves  had two other regional placers in the No. 1 doubles team of juniors Anna Bratlee and Marisa Welsh, who placed third, and senior No. 1 singles player Sarah Nguyen, who finished fourth. Bratlee and Welsh took third at No. 2 doubles last season and ended up losing in the semifinals to the same team — Greeley West’s Kayla Hoskins and Ellie Davidson — who denied them a trip to state last year.

Nguyen placed fourth at No. 1 singles for the second straight season.

Aurora Central also played in the tournament, but didn’t have any wins.
