AURORA | With regional tournaments looming, every city prep girls tennis coach wants their final dual matches to be competitive.
Cherokee Trail coach Paul Whipple and Rangeview coach Chad Forde both came away pleased with the results of the non-league meeting of the two Monday afternoon on the Cougars’ courts.
Led by a singles sweep of No. 1 Kiran Dass, No. 2 Morgan Frushour and No. 3 Yinlin Li, Cherokee Trail got the victory with a 5-2 decision over Rangeview, which got a strong tune-up against a Centennial League foe after cruising through the majority of the East Metro Athletic Conference season.
Three matches needed five sets to decide, including one of the Raiders’ two victories — both in doubles — when Melissa Estudillo and Justina Keokoukingthale topped the Cougars’ Drishti Patel and Caitlyn Daniels, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.
Li also needed three sets to outlast Rangeview sophomore Elena Dedi at No. 3 singles, while the Cherokee Trail No. 1 doubles duo of seniors Kayla Robbins and Kylee Wilhelm were the last varsity match off the court as Rangeview’s Natalie Provancal and Melody Tucker extended them in a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 Cougars’ win.
Cherokee Trail got off to a fast start with singles sweeps from Frushour — who completely blanked Rangeview’s Kelly Bowers at No. 2 singles — plus Dass’ tidy 6-2, 6-0 win over the Raiders’ Hailey Sorenson.
The Raiders evened the match at 2-2 following consecutive victories by Estudillo and Keokoukingthale plus the No. 2 tandem of Lindsey Duran and Jourdan Williams, who downed Cherokee Trail’s Prisha Patel and Asya Sergoyan in straight sets.
The Cougars’ clinching fourth win came from the No. 4 doubles team of Lindsey Stolting and Rhea Verma, who won a tiebreaker in the second set to close out a straight sets victory.
Both teams finish their dual meet season against Vista PEAK, with Rangeview facing the Bison on Wednesday and Cherokee Trail playing host to them Thursday.
