GREENWOOD VILLAGE | Grandview finished with placers at six of the seven positions at the Class 5A Region 1 girls tennis tournament at Cherry Creek High School, but none advanced to the 5A state tournament.

The No. 2 doubles team of sophomores Marisa Welsh and Anna Bratlee had the Wolves’ best chance to make state, as they built a set lead against Greeley West’s Kayla Hoskins and Ellie Davison in a playback match. But the Wolves couldn’t sustain the momentum and the Greeley West duo prevailed 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 to grab the second spot at the position in the 5A state tournament May 8-10 at the Gates Tennis Center.

A young Grandview team that competed with just seniors racked up 18 points and was in the third-place match all but No. 3 singles, but only Welsh and Bratlee posted a victory, as they downed Kelli Clark and Lauren Spillane of Liberty by a score of 6-2, 6-4.

Fourth-place finishers for the Wolves were junior Sarah Nguyen (No. 1 singles), junior Kate Laughlin (No. 2 singles), seniors Shelby Hackney & Holly Emmons (No. 1 doubles), junior Sonya Livitz & freshman Rachel Cullop (No. 3 doubles) and sophomores Emma Olsen-Dufour & Olivia Brohl (No. 4 doubles).

Aurora Central and Gateway were two of the three teams that did not score a point.

The Olys entered a full lineup in the tournament, while the Trojans had three singles players and two doubles teams in the draw.
