AURORA | As the years roll along, the Rangeview girls swim team seems to get more dominant at the annual Aurora Public Schools Championship meet.

The Raiders won their 14th consecutive APS meet Jan. 28 at Hinkley High School and did so by having the individual champion in all 12 events for the first time on their way to a 171-point victory over the host Thunderbirds.

Coach Peter Gerard’s Rangeview team recorded its largest margin of victory since 2010 behind two-event champions Jasmine Johnson, Keaghan Banaitis and Haley Zant, while Lauren Graff, Sydney Comet and diver Sarah Mortenson also won individually.

Johnson, a freshman, recorded a time of 2 minutes, 16.42 seconds, in the 200 yard individual medley, which gave her a second 5A state qualifying time and came dangerously close to the meet record of 2:16.29 set by Danielle Connoy in 1994.

Mortenson, who is state bound for the second straight season, won on the diving board with a score of 403.85 points.

Hinkley had two near-victories from sophomore Emely Canales on its way to 312 points, while Gateway finished third with 193 and Aurora Central came in fourth with 116. It was the third straight season the teams finished in the same order at the APS meet.

The meet marked the end of the regular season and APS teams now head to the EMAC Championship meet, scheduled for Feb. 3-4 at Gateway.

Rangeview finished the EMAC regular season undefeated in dual meets — including its first-ever head-to-head win over Brighton — and is intent on improving on its best-ever finish of third in league.

Next season’s APS Championship meet rotates to Rangeview.
