AURORA | Last season, coming within four points of Arapahoe in a dual meet would have been inconceivable for the Grandview girls swim team.

This is a new year, however, and the Wolves did just that Thursday evening, giving the traditional Centennial League powerhouse Warriors a fight all the way to the final race before falling 95-91 in a league dual at Grandview High School.

Grandview was on the short end of a 109-77 defeat last season against Arapahoe, but made up the difference this season by winning eight of the 12 events and setting a new pool record in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Junior Madison Dirks won twice individually and senior Kianna Lee, juniors Hannah Meehan and Mattie Cassaday and sophomore Sami Daniels also posted first-place results for the Wolves, who dropped to 2-1 in dual meets on the season.

The highlight of the meet for Grandview was the performance of the 200 freestyle relay team of Lee, Dirks, Amanda Matheson and Morgan Ammon, which posted a time of 1 minute, 42.12 seconds to erase the previous pool mark held by Centennial League nemesis Cherry Creek of 1:42.21.

Arapahoe won four events and also knocked Cherry Creek out of the pool record position in the 400 freestyle relay, as the Warriors clocked a 3:39.03 to take down the Bruins’ 3:39.39.
