FORT COLLINS | The Grandview girls swim team continued to move up the standings at the Class 5A state swim meet, albeit slowly.
The Wolves scored 93 points in Saturday’s finals at the Edora Pool & Ice Center, which put coach Karen Ammon’s team ninth out of 33 scoring teams and helped them improve their standing for the fourth straight season. Grandview was 15th in 2010, 12th in 2011 and 10th last season.
Junior Madi Dirks posted a career-best with a 3rd-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly, while also swimming on the 200 freestyle relay team that tied for third with an All-America Consideration time. The Wolves
“Every year so far has been a move up; little by little, growing the team from within,” said Ammon, whose team posted its best finish since coming in eighth at the 2008 5A state meet.
“It’s been a growth process and that growth is really spearheaded by the girls coming together and setting their goals at the beginning of the season,” she added. “They looked at what they wanted and how they wanted to get there.”
Dirks — coming off winning a pair of titles at the Centennial “A” League Championships — had two All-America Consideration performances individually with her time of 1 minute, 51.56 seconds in the 200 freestyle and 56.14 in the 100 butterfly.
“Madi keeps getting faster every year; one of these days she’s going to break through and get what she wants,” Ammon said.
Senior Kianna Lee — who was 15th in the 50 freestyle — also swam on the relay with Dirks, plus junior Amanda Matheson and sophomore Morgan Ammon.
The same group, with Mackenzie Ammon in place of Matheson, came in seventh in the 400 freestyle relay.
Several other things pleased Karen Ammon about the team’s season.
She was happy with the 200 medley relay team of Morgan Ammon, Matheson, Hannah Meehan and Mattie Cassaday making it back to consolation finals, something that hadn’t happened since 2009 for the program. The Wolves’ group finished 15th.
Also, Grandview had a freshman — Mia Wood — among its state contingent this season.
Wood didn’t make it back in the top 16 in either the 200 or 500 freestyles, but she was 26th in the 200 and 32nd in the 500.
Notes: Grandview and state champion Regis Jesuit were the only Aurora teams to score at the state meet. Smoky Hill, Cherokee Trail and Gateway had qualifiers, but none made it through the preliminary rounds of their respective events. …Smoky Hill’s Scott Cohen was nominated for 5A Swim Coach of the Year, but the honor went to Chaparral’s Brooke Westall. Regis Jesuit’s Missy Franklin was selected 5A Swimmer of the Year.
