AURORA | The Grandview girls swim team continued to succeed as much in the classroom as it did in the pool.

Coach Karen Ammon’s Wolves — who finished 12th at the Class 5A girls state swim meet in February — were one of just 60 teams across the country to received the Gold Star Award for their academic prowess in the 2015-16 season from the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA).

Grandview’s cumulative Grade Point Average for the season stood at 3.855, which tied for 20th best in the country with Brighton High School of Cottonwood, Utah. The Wolves were the only Colorado team to earn Gold Star honors, while Valor Christian appeared in the Silver Star category with a 3.697 GPA.

Ammon’s team has captured the Gold Star Scholar award for three straight seasons and also collected Silver Star honors in 2011-2012 and 2012-13.

In addition, nearly a handful of Wolves appeared on NISCA’s list of 2016 Academic All-Americans.

A total of 29 girls swimmers from Colorado earned the distinction, among them the Grandview group of swimmers April and Mia Wood — who are both bound for the Colorado School of Mines — Dartmouth-bound Loghan Thomas and diver Isobel Griffin. Mia Wood and Thomas were Valedictorians of Grandview’s Class of 2016.

Cherokee Trail diver Jessica Burley also earned Academic All-American honors.
