FORT COLLINS | Proudly sporting her Regis Jesuit swim cap for the last time, Missy Franklin fought off tears and records Saturday afternoon.

Swimming for the final time with her beloved Raiders and her swan song at the Class 5A girls state swim meet, Franklin won twice individually and helped spur two relays to victory at the Edora Pool & Ice Center, which helped lift Regis Jesuit to its second state championship in three seasons.

Entered in “off events” for the good of the team, Franklin set a new high school national independent record of 1 minute, 56.85 seconds in winning the 200-yard individual medley, took down another state record in the 500 freestyle and anchored a pair of relays as the Raiders racked up 287 points to easily outdistance last season’s champion, Fossil Ridge, which had 243.

“You couldn’t have written a better script,” Regis Jesuit coach Nick Frasersmith said.

The Raiders’ victorious 200-yard freestyle relay included Franklin plus sophomores Taylor Wilson and Meggie Chase along with freshman Amy Lenderink, while the winning 400 freestyle group consisted of Franklin, Wilson, senior Lindsay Kriz and freshman Lindsay Painton.

It was a particularly good meet for Wilson, who in addition to her relay titles finished fourth in the 50 freestyle and ninth in the 100 freestyle.

Painton turned in a pair of top-five finishes in her first state meet, including a third-place result in the 100 backstroke, which she picked up the slack with the absence of Franklin, winner of the event the past three seasons. Painton also was fifth in the 100 freestyle.

Diving results bolstered the Raiders as well, as freshman McKensi Austin scored 447.45 points to come in fourth and sophomore Kellyn Toole (417.55) finished eighth.
