THORNTON | The Cherokee Trail girls swim team is off to a flying start to the new season and very nearly added an invitational championship to its resume.

Coach Kevin Chatham’s Cougars won four events at the Legacy Invitational Saturday at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center, posted a slew of Class 5A state qualifying times and established a number of new program records to finish as a close runner-up to host Legacy atop a 14-team field.

Senior Skylar Brgoch had a fantastic day with a pair of event victories and also swam a leg on the 400 freestyle relay team that capped the meet with a win for the Cougars, who accrued 636 points to finish just 22 points behind the Lightning and nearly 300 in front of third-place Broomfield.

Brgoch, a Washington State signee, began her winning ways by posting a time of 24.74 seconds in the 50 yard freestyle and then dropped a 56.42 in the 100 yard butterfly, the event in which she placed ninth in last season’s Class 5A state meet. Brgoch’s margin of victory in the butterfly was more than two seconds.

Sophomore Emme Metzmaker earned Cherokee Trail’s other individual win when her time of 53.74 seconds in the 100 freestyle put her comfortably in front of runner-up Isabella Forsman of Legacy.

Brgoch and Metzmaker were part of the 200 yard medley relay team that finished second and also made up half of the 400 freestyle relay, as they joined senior Emily Sovern and junior Morgan Walker for a time of 3:38.15 that was more than five seconds faster than Legacy, which had relays finish both second and third.

Cherokee Trail returns to the pool at 5 p.m. Dec. 9 at Mullen.
