THORNTON | A week after topping its district rivals at the annual Aurora Public Schools Championships meet, the Rangeview girls swim team did it again Saturday at the East Metro Athletic Conference Championships.
The Raiders had no individual champions, but piled up 348 points in the finals at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center to finish a city-best third among the eight teams competing, moving up a spot from their finish in 2013.
Gateway finished third at last season’s league championships, but slipped into fourth this season with 258 points, bolstered by a pair of event winners. Junior Christina Horstman won her second career EMAC crown when she captured the 200 yard individual medley, while sophomore Jessica Mitchell repeated as league diving champion.
Hinkley scored 168 points to finish in fifth place for the second straight season, while youth-laden Aurora Central dropped from sixth to eighth with 48 points.
Brighton repeated as EMAC team champion with 628 points, followed again by the Northglenn/Thornton combo team with 374.
Rangeview did plenty of damage in the relays, as it placed in the top three all three relays. The 400 freestyle relay team of Emma Hug, Brittany Ward, Josephine Koch and Demi Hassan posted the Raiders’ top result with a second-place finish.
Senior Mariah Franklin finished 2nd in the 100 breaststroke and swam her way into two championship finals for Rangeview, as did Demi Hassan, Josephine Koch and Bree Scott.
Horstman clocked a time of 2:28.81 to win the 200 IM, her second title following a 200 freestyle win last season. Horstman also finished second in the 500 freestyle, missing out on qualifying for the 5A state meet by just five seconds.
Mitchell won last season’s EMAC title by just 10 points, but the 307.80 she scored this time was good enough to win by 41 points this season. The Olys dominated the diving competition, as Alli Rosales finished fourth and Lluvia Vega took fifth.
Hinkley didn’t have any championship finalists, but Morgan Zugelder (200 IM), Zion Jones (100 butterfly) and Kimberly Moran (100 backstroke) each won the consolation finals heat in their respective events to finish in ninth place.
Michelle Isom made the consolation finals in two events to pace Aurora Central.
